Multigenre

April 19, 2010

First of all I did not realize there was so many different genres. I like the idea of given students a topic or topics to choose from and allowing them to use multigenres to present the information they find. In the article “Exploring the Past through Multigenre Writing” I like the quote “The mulitgenre project can help students apply writing as away to discover, read, evaluate, and organize information.” I think this gives students the chance to be creative and use different abilities they have. I feel as a teacher I need t introduce more genres in my classroom and give my students flexibility when writing. Students would perform more to their ability if they got a choice of what kind of genre they could present instead of being told what to do. This also would give students a chance to be creative and shine at what they are good at. This is also something I would like to try in my classroom. As a teacher I want to introduce more genres in my class and give my students more of a choice at how to present something. Let them choose from  a list of genres to present their information in.

Memoir

April 19, 2010

I like how the article “A Study of Memoir” refers to a memoir “It’s a snippet of a memory that a writer tells about after they have had time to think about it.”I have found this to be so true. You have many memories but usually the memories have some relation to one another. Not all memories relate to one another. You have different parts in your life you want to reflect on. After reading about memoir’s  it made me think about a person writing autobiography but in a more meaningful way. Instead of listing just dates and facts it informs you about memories in their life. Memories can explain ones live if told in the right way. I like the idea used the article “A Study of Memoir” about having students read text and determine if it is a memoir or not. I think this exposes students to different types of literature. This is an activity I would like to try in my classroom. I would also like to give my students the opportunity to write a memoir.

Poems

March 17, 2010

Star

I am a ball of burning gas hot and very bright.
I wonder just how many there are of me.
I hear rockets blazing by.
I see a million others who looks like me but that are different.
I want to be seen in all colors.
I am a ball of burning gas hot and very bright.

I pretend to sleep during the day.
I feel lonely in the huge dark sky.
I touch the night sky high and bright.
I worry humans will pollute my surroundings.
I cry when the moon blocks out the light from me.
I am a ball of burning gas hot and very bright.

I understand I help sailors find their way home.
I say look to me and I will guide you.
I dream of living in a world that is not so dark.
I try to form pictures in the sky with a few of closet friends.
I hope to burn brighter than any of the others.
I am a ball of burning gas hot and very bright.

My marvelous mother my friend
Oh how outstanding and wonderful she is
The talks and time spent sharing
Her tender hands holding and hugging as she
Embraces me with encouragement, warmth, energy, and comfort.
Remembering and reminiscing the good times and bad.

Leaves
Leaves of green blooming.
Tickling branches in warm air.
Spring has arrived!

So Much Depends Upon….

March 1, 2010

So Much Depends Upon…

So much depends upon my dark rim frames

with clear lens and curved ear pieces.

They allow me to enjoy the sight of all

the pretty and ugly around us.

They are special to me because without them

the world would be a dark blob.

Formula Poetry

February 24, 2010

I found Kucan’s article to be very informative.   As an adult  I can not belive all the different types of poetry.  I do not remember learning about all these different types as a student. As a third grade teacher I find it hard to come up with creative and different ways to teach characterization, plot, and setting of  a story.  I can not wait to use I poems to teach and find these parts of literature. I think it will give the students a new way to look for these parts and a different way to set them up.   I also liked her idea of having students create I poems before reading to access prior knowledge. I think this is something else students struggle with. By doing I poems they are  finding details and putting them in a format they will not forget.

I truly enjoyed reading the books, “I Am the Mummy HEB NEFERT” and “Atlantic”. I thought it was so neat how it was wrote from the prospective of the Mummy and the Atlantic Ocean. After I read it I read it to my husband because I thought it was so neat. The pictures are beautiful in both books. I can not wait to  share these stories with my students and try writing I poems with them.  Next week when we start a new story in our basal I am going to try  I poems to access  knowledge. I will update you on how it goes.”Dirty Laundry Pile” was a neat poem book. It was cool how the poems were written from an a person, animal, place, or things perspective.

will be a great book to introduce a poetry unit with. I will use this book when I begin my unit. I think this is a great way to get students to brain storm. The students will be  writing poetry and will  not realize that is what they are doing. I would start by using their names.

Sliver Seeds would be a good for an introduction book also. I like how they print the word big somewhere on the page and then it gives you the acrostic. They are about nature and that is something our students can relate to.

Flick Flash had a neat approach to it. I loved how each poem was in the design of what the poem was about. This is another great example for students. I can see some of my more artistic students trying to do this. It gives the poems character.

I think we as teacher need to remember how important it is that we read aloud to our students. Sometimes I think teachers in upper grades are so test driven they feel like they do not always have time for read aloud. I find myself struggling to find time. This is very important for our students. I love the quote, “The writer’s notebook is the perfect place to collect language that is memorable, fun, or amazing.” I think we should encourage our students to write down words to expand their vocabulary. Make a section in the back of their writer’s notebook just for this.

Class 4 Virtual Class Meeting

February 11, 2010

I love Ann Lauterbach jewels of wisdom: ” A poem is not a puzzle to be solved. A poem is an experience, an event, in and of language.”  The questions she asked I feel will be very helpful as we start writing poetry in the third grade. The concrete tool box will be something great to make for each student. In the toolbox they will have pen, pencil, notebook, dictionary, and thesaurus.

Paper Clip

When I look at this object, what do I see? A tiny silver object weighing a gram

Smell? Metal

Hear? Cling

Taste?

Touch? Slick

What does the object do? Holds paper together

What could you do with it? clean out your ears.

Where or when do you find it? On a desk top or on the floor

When you think of it, what people, animals, places, actions, or ideas pop in your head? A teacher, school, office, filing

How or why is it special? Keeps papers together therefor desktops are cleaner.

Poetry

February 11, 2010

As a student in school I always hated English class when it came time for poetry.  I never could write a poem that made sense much less rhyme. The book gives great ideas on how to get your students brianstroming before writing poetry. I like the idea of giving the students a topic or statement and having them make a list poem using one word lines, phases, or sentences. It also gives several of great suggestions like use your senses to observe and make a heart with words. The students can take the words from the heart and create a poem. We are going to be introducing poetry to our students in two weeks. I can not wait to try some of these activities. In Cold Plums She talks about how important it is to chose the write types of poetry to share with students. I see how this can make a difference. I will read some the poetry books from this class before starting my unit. It also talked about sharing different selections. To me this is a great idea it gives the students a chance to see a varity of types. Love That Dog would be a great book to start a poetry unit with. I feel like it is a journal and astudent is writing about how they can not write poetry and days go back they make their entries into a poem. Brown Angles is an exampe of how to write poems about people. This is Just to Say I love it. I think all students have heard the beginning lines of all these poems. I think it would be interesting to give the students one of these lines and have them make a heart of words or even a list poem and see what they would come up with.
